The most popular messenger in Russia is WhatsApp, according to the analysts of the App Annie research company based on the results of the third quarter of 2015. However, Viber brings the most profit to its creators from Russian users.
App Annie researchers looked at which messengers have the most monthly active users in key countries around the world. For example, Facebook Messenger was the most widespread in the USA and Canada, WeChat in China, Line in Japan, and KakaoTalk in South Korea.
Skype leads in terms of revenue in the USA and Canada, Viber in Russia. “Facebook Messenger does not charge users, and WhatsApp Messenger only charges $ 0.99 per year (after the first year of free use). As a result, in the third quarter of 2015, Skype and Viber became the most profitable messaging apps in many of the markets where Facebook apps were leading by MAU, ”the study authors note.
Asian messengers are capturing new markets with new features that go beyond messaging, App Annie notes. For example, WeChat offers users the ability to order a taxi via messenger, pay utility bills, or purchase movie tickets.
